10 Mindfulness-Based Strategies To Help You Survive Geo-Political Turmoil

Samantha Amit May 31, 2024 12:35 pm Comments Off on 10 Mindfulness-Based Strategies To Help You Survive Geo-Political Turmoil

Today’s world is more connected than ever, yet it is also extremely fragmented.

Changing market dynamics, political unrest, and trade tensions create complex terrain that requires strategic thinking and the ability to pivot swiftly to minimize risks, protect reputations, seize opportunities, and ensure long-term resilience.

It can feel overwhelming, and many leaders are experiencing these realities. Fortunately, we can use mindfulness-based strategies to overcome them and thrive.

A Deeper Look At Where We Are

In addition to conflicts between countries, the Investment Outlook Report from Goldman Sachs Asset Management highlights how key elections in Russia, India, South Africa, America, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan will profoundly impact the global economy.

The near future promises an intensification of these global economic frictions. According to the US National Intelligence Council’s “Global Trends 2040: A More Contested World,” no single region will dominate the global marketplace. This allows a broader range of actors to compete and advance their goals, interests, and ideologies. These shifting realities will place increasing pressure on companies, affecting business operations, strategies, and priorities.

Bringing It Closer To Home

Rising geopolitical turmoil is compounded by consumers’ and employees’ demands that businesses take a stance on societal issues. Employees, who are increasingly savvy and vocal about political and social issues, expect leaders to acknowledge and even mirror their feelings.

The C-Suite faces the challenge of satisfying both the board’s expectations and the workforce’s growing concerns.

The stress experienced at the top echelons of an organization inevitably trickles down to managers and team leaders, leading to workforce anxiety and low morale triggered by geopolitical exigencies—pressure mounts from external forces, internal hierarchies, and interpersonal dynamics. This stress can also take a toll on personal well-being, affecting sleep, relationships, and overall happiness.

How can you navigate this intense pressure, meet your company’s demands for production and stability, thrive in your profession and personal life, and ensure that your team members’ voices are heard and respected?

10 Mindfulness-Based Strategies to Help You Survive Geo-Political Turmoil

Mindfulness-based strategies are powerful tools for emotional resilience and mental clarity in this climate of relentless stress. Mindfulness, the practice of staying in the present, being curious about, and noticing what is happening around you and within you in a non-judgmental way, can help you cope with external and internal pressures. Research has shown that regular mindfulness practice can reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance emotional well-being.

  1. Plan regular Check-Ins: Schedule brief check-ins with yourself during the day. Do this 3-4 times. Pause, take five breaths, ask yourself how you’re feeling, and acknowledge any stress or distractions. You may want to practice using this 3-minute Mindful Pause.
  2. Stay Informed, Not Overwhelmed: Allocate specific times to catch up on the news rather than letting it consume your day. Avoid constantly checking updates.
  3. Make time for deep work and avoid context switching: Block out time for focused work. Focus on one task, eliminate distractions, and give it your full attention. Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and commit to working on one thing at a time. You may want to try using the Pomodoro Technique.
  4. Focus on What You Can Control: Reflect on a recent instance where geopolitical events impacted your focus at work. Direct your energy towards aspects of your work and life that you can influence. Let go of worries about things beyond your control.
  5. Support and Connect with Your Team: Create a structure that supports a time when team members can express their concerns. Think of someone who is experiencing a tough time. How can you show empathy and support to this person? Write about a specific action you can take to help.
  6. Establish Micro-habits for Well-being: Establish daily micro-habits, like mindfully drinking a morning coffee or taking a short walk at lunch, even if you only have ten minutes to spare. Share this with your team and encourage them to create their own micro-habits.
  7. Listen Mindfully: Listen actively during meetings or conversations. Focus on the speaker without planning your response while they’re talking. If your thoughts wander to a future worry or event, let that go and return to focusing on the speaker.
  8. Set Boundaries: Define clear boundaries between work and personal time. Ensure you’re not bringing stress from world events into your workspace. Create team norms that support these boundaries, such as how to communicate and respond after work.
  9. Practice the Body Scan: Take 20 minutes to do a mindful body scan. This will relax your mind and help you focus on your body.
  10. Practice Self-Compassion: Reflect on a recent challenge or mistake. How can you offer yourself understanding and kindness instead of criticism? Make a list of ways to support yourself through difficulties.

Conclusion

There’s very little we can do about all the chaos in the world. But we can incorporate mindfulness-based strategies in our daily lives to help us meet our challenges, inspire our teams, grow, and thrive. Over time, these strategies can also lead to improved decision-making, better team dynamics, and a more supportive work environment.
